The India Pavilion was formally inaugurated on 6th May, 2026 at the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia (Biennale Arte 2026), Venice, Italy. India’s participation, after a gap of seven years, marks a significant moment in the country’s cultural diplomacy and reaffirms its growing presence in the global contemporary art landscape. The Pavilion is titled ‘Geographies of Distance: Remembering Home’ and is located at the historic Arsenale di Venezia, where it will remain open to visitors from 9th May to 22nd November, 2026.
The inauguration ceremony took place in the presence of Hon’ble Union Minister of Culture and Tourism Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Secretary, Ministry of Culture Shri Vivek Aggarwal, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Culture Ms. Lily Pandeya, Ambassador of India to Italy Ms Vani Rao, along with Ms Isha Ambani, Director, Reliance Industries Limited, Mr Sunil Kant Munjal, Founder Patron, Serendipity Arts Foundation, and Dr. Amin Jaffer, Curator of the India Pavilion.
The Pavilion has been set up by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, with contribution from its institutions - Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), Lalit Kala Akademi and the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA)- & in collaboration with Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) and Serendipity Arts Foundation. The pavilion will feature exhibitions- Sakarma Sonam Tashi, Alwar Balasubramanim, Ranjani Shettar, Sumakshi Singh, and Asim Waqif, and explore themes of memory, identity, belonging and cultural continuity through a contemporary Indian perspective as India’s response to the Biennale’s overarching theme, ‘In Minor Keys.’
Addressing the gathering during the inauguration, Shri Shekhawat highlighted India’s expanding cultural engagement with the world and underscored the Government’s vision of “Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi”, where development and heritage progress together. He noted that India’s participation at the Venice Biennale reflects the country’s commitment to strengthening cultural dialogue and showcasing the richness and diversity of Indian artistic traditions on global platforms.
Prior to the inauguration, a formal reception was hosted at Conservatorio Benedetto Marcello, Palazzo Pisani, marking the ceremonial beginning of India’s participation. The evening commenced with a traditional lamp lighting and an invocation, followed by addresses by distinguished guests. The reception concluded with a captivating cultural performance by Padma Bhushan awardee Bickram Ghosh, and a stirring rendition of Vande Mataram - marking 150 years of our National Song (#VandeMataram150).
