A three-day commemorative programme to mark the 125th birth anniversary of Dr Harekrushna Mahatab was organised from 21 to 23 December 2025 by the Odia Chair of the National Sanskrit University, Tirupati, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The central theme of the programme was “Architecture of Modern Odisha”, highlighting Dr Mahatab’s multidimensional contribution to the political, cultural and intellectual shaping of modern Odisha.
The programme commenced with a ceremonial lamp lighting by dignitaries, followed by the inauguration of a special exhibition curated by the Odia Chair, showcasing the life and contributions of Dr Harekrushna Mahatab. A plenary session held on the inaugural day focused on the intellectual foundations of modern Odisha and Dr Mahatab’s role in harmonising tradition with modern governance. Speakers underlined his visionary leadership, his contribution to strengthening Odia identity (Odia Asmita), and his lifelong commitment to culture, language and nation-building.
The commemorative programme featured scholarly deliberations by historians, Sanskrit scholars, political thinkers and cultural experts from across the country. Discussions examined Dr Mahatab’s political leadership, literary contributions, administrative vision, and his efforts towards the preservation and promotion of Sanskrit and Sri Jagannath cultural traditions.
Over the three days, 17 academic sessions were organised, providing a platform for young researchers to engage with senior scholars and receive academic mentoring. The valedictory session witnessed the presentation of 140 research papers by professors, researchers and scholars. The programme reaffirmed the enduring relevance of Dr Harekrushna Mahatab’s legacy in shaping Odisha’s modern political vision, cultural identity and Sanskrit heritage.
