Ministry of Culture and Prayas Foundation Mark 50th Anniversary of Emergency through Public Awareness Programme

A commemorative programme marking the 50th anniversary of the Emergency (1975) was organised on 8 February 2026 at the Rotary Club of Kankaria in Vallabhvadi, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, by Prayas Foundation in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. This event was inaugurated in the presence of esteemed guests, including renowned artists from various cultural fields, social workers, and high-ranking officials.

The seminar aimed to raise awareness about the impact of the Emergency imposed in 1975, a dark chapter in India's democratic history. It addressed the significance of protecting the Constitution of India and the importance of safeguarding democratic values from the misuse of power.

Throughout the day, the seminar included in-depth discussions on the historical suppression of civil liberties that many individuals faced during this tumultuous period. With a mix of cultural artists and government officials in attendance, the event provided a broader perspective on how the imposition of the Emergency created an environment of fear and uncertainty in the country. This platform facilitated a deeper understanding of constitutional rights and reinforced the importance of safeguarding democracy, receiving positive feedback from the participants.
