The Ministry of Culture, Government of India, in association with the Delhi Karnataka Sangha, organised a commemorative event to mark 200 years of Rani Chennamma’s historic win against the British in the Kittur War of 1824. The event was held at Siri Fort Auditorium, New Delhi, on 24th October 2025.
The programme was graced by Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Hon’ble Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, along with Shri Vivek Aggarwal, Secretary, Ministry of Culture; Shri Samar Nanda, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Culture; and Shri C.M. Nagaraja, President, Delhi Karnataka Sangha. The occasion also witnessed the participation of Shri Swami Vachanananda, Spiritual Leader and Founder of Shwaasa, Karnataka and Shri Narayansa Krishnasa Bhandage, Member of Parliament from Rajya Sabha.
The event began with vibrant cultural performances by artists from Karnataka in Delhi who performed a melodious rendition of the Nada Geete, and cultural performances that brought Karnataka's rich artistic traditions to life. This was followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp and floral tributes to Rani Chennamma. A specially minted commemorative coin honouring Rani Chennamma’s legacy was released by the dignitaries, symbolising the nation’s recognition of her pioneering contribution to India’s early freedom struggle.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri Vivek Aggarwal, Secretary, Ministry of Culture, paid tribute to Rani Chennamma, describing her as a symbol of courage, patriotism and women’s empowerment.
In his keynote address, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Hon’ble Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, underlined the significance of Rani Chennamma’s defiance against colonial rule and her rightful place in India’s historical narrative. He said,
“On this inspiring occasion, Rani Chennamma’s unique character and great personality inspire us all to further strengthen our commitment and service to the nation. Her valour and struggle teach us that we should never hesitate in serving the nation.”
The grand event also marked the closing of the year-long commemoration, which was launched in 2024 to celebrate Rani Chennamma’s historic triumph in the 1824 Kittur War and her indomitable spirit that continues to inspire generations. As part of the year-long celebration, exhibitions, cultural programmes, lectures, and essay and painting competitions were organised across the country to deepen public engagement and honour her legacy.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all participants and reaffirming the Ministry of Culture’s commitment to preserve and promote the memory of heroic figures who shaped India’s national heritage.
