The Ministry of Culture has launched the Gyan Bharatam Mission—a landmark initiative aimed at surveying, documenting, conserving, and digitising India’s vast manuscript heritage. The mission sets out to identify and preserve over one crore manuscripts currently housed in academic institutions, museums, libraries, and private collections across the country.
Digitisation stands as a core component of this initiative, intending to create a National Digital Repository to ensure wider accessibility of these invaluable records. Over the next five years, the Mission will systematically digitise one crore manuscripts, making them available for scholars, researchers, and the general public. Through this effort, the Government of India reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding and promoting the rich intellectual legacy of Bharat. This information was shared by Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.
