Maratha Military Landscapes Added to UNESCO World Heritage List

India's "Maratha Military Landscapes", comprising 12 iconic forts, has been officially inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List during the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee held in Paris. These forts, located across Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, include Raigad, Rajgad, Shivneri, Pratapgarh, Panhala, Gingee Fort and others, recognised under Criteria (iv) and (vi) for their cultural and historical significance. The inclusion highlights the Maratha military legacy and its strategic fort architecture.

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) continues conservation work at these sites, with Mumbai Circle allocated ₹15.35 Cr (2022–23), ₹15.56 Cr (2023–24), and ₹12.58 Cr (2024–25). Currently, 13 properties—2 from Maharashtra and 11 from Madhya Pradesh—feature in UNESCO’s Tentative List. This step reflects India’s ongoing commitment to preserving its rich architectural and cultural heritage. The announcement was made by Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in the Lok Sabha.
