Mountain Railways of India

West Bengal

The Mountain Railways of India, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, showcase outstanding engineering achievements in connecting remote mountainous regions. Among them, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway in West Bengal, opened in 1881, is a pioneering hill passenger railway linking the plains of Siliguri to Darjeeling. Its innovative design and bold engineering transformed Darjeeling into a major tea-producing and tourist hub. The railway played a key role in regional development and still operates under Northeast Frontier Railway. Alongside the Nilgiri and Kalka-Shimla railways, it symbolizes India’s legacy of rail innovation in mountainous terrain.
